Teiji Itō, 1935-1982, was a Tokyo-born composer who resided in New York City. His compositional style reflects Japanese, African, American Indian, and American influences. A percussion performer, he was particularly interested in the use of percussion instruments in various cultures. Itō composed music for some of the experimental films of his first wife Maya Deren, who died in 1961.
